The aims of the department are that each pupil on leaving school is numerate, has sufficient mathematical skills for the career of his/her choice, and will understand the mathematics likely to be encountered in everyday life. In addition we hope that pupils will acquire the problem solving skills and logical thinking of a confident mathematician.
The Maths course in years 7, 8 and 9 provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to access the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics course in years 10 and 11.
In Year 7, 8, 9 every maths lesson will focus on the teaching for understanding curriculum. This will be embedded in lessons and in homework. We hope this will enable students to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge rapidly and accurately as well as solve a variety of routine and non-routine problems.
Massessments assess content covered in Mastery lessons alongside exam style problems.
If you would like further information about the topics and themes being taught please contact:
M Hopkinson Head of Department.
In Years 10 and 11 every maths lesson continues to focus on the teaching for understanding curriculum, extending their problem solving and reasoning skills. This will be embedded in lessons and in homework. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding in a range of more complex topics and the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge rapidly and accurately as well as solve a variety of routine and non-routine problems.
During Year 10 there will also be an emphasis on teaching for understanding to further develop their conceptual understanding to support ability to apply this to examination techniques.

How you can help your child in Maths?
Knowledge of timestables is essential and regular practice will be beneficial. Any opportunities for your child to share with you what they are working on in maths will be of value. Support with homework can be very beneficial, provided that your child is the main contributor.
