The aims of the department are that each student leaves the academy numerate, has sufficient mathematical skills for the career of his/her choice, and will understand the mathematics likely to be encountered in everyday life.
In Year 7, 8 and 9, every maths lesson focused on the new maths mastery curriculum. This is embedded in lessons and in homework. The aim is that all students become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge rapidly and accurately.
In Year 10, students learn the content required for the GCSE course. These topics cover Algebra, Data, Geometry and Number. A large focus of these lessons is using mathematical knowledge and skills in multi-step problem-solving.
The focus of Y11 is to revise all of the previously taught GCSE content of maths, ensuring that students are confident and competent in applying them in exam style problems.
How you can help your child in Maths
Knowledge of timetables is essential and regular practice will be beneficial. Any opportunities for your child to share with you what they are working on in maths will be of value. Support with homework can be very beneficial, provided that your child is the main contributor.
